Pro Tools will only use a Hardware Insert with the same Input and Output number (e.g. input 3 and output 3). The Red 4Pre/8Pre/16Line features flexible input and output routing so it's possible to use any combination of physical inputs and outputs, providing these are then routed to matching inputs/outputs in Pro Tools.
The steps for doing this are the same, regardless of whether the Red is in Thunderbolt or Pro Tools mode.
Example
Below are the steps required to add a stereo hardware insert (for example, a stereo compressor). We need to route both the input and output channels we'll be using to the same numbered virtual inputs/outputs in Pro Tools - we'll use numbers 3-4 in this instance.
We'll be using Line Outputs 3-4 to send to the compressor and Line Inputs 5-6 for the return signal.
- Configure the Input Routing tab in RedNet Control. Route Line Inputs 5-6 to DAW Inputs 3-4:
- Configure the Output Routing tab in RedNet Control. Route outputs 3-4 in Pro Tools to Line Outputs 3-4. DAW output channels are labelled as "Playback" channels in RedNet Control:
- Set up the Insert in Pro Tools. In Pro Tools, go to the Setup > I/O menu, then navigate to the 'Insert' tab.
