Applies to GarageBand and all Focusrite Interfaces
This guide walks you through how to setup your Focusrite audio interface in GarageBand, setup an audio track for recording, and start recording. To learn more about how to use GarageBand, see Apple's help centre:
Getting Started with GarageBand
- Open GarageBand, and select the Details drop down from the start screen.
- Select your interface name under the Input Device and Output Device drop down menus.
- Select Empty Project to create a new project.
- To record audio from your interface, select either Mic or Guitar from the list, depending on what you're recording, and click Create to start your new project.

Select the input on your interface where your microphone or guitar is connected. This is the input GarageBand will record. When selecting your Input, you can select a mono or stereo input, denoted by a single circle
or a double circle
.
If recording a single microphone or guitar, select mono. If you are not sure which is right for your recording, this article covers which option is best: When to use Mono or Stereo.
If you would like to hear the input whilst recording, click the Input Monitoring button to enable Input Monitoring.
- When you're ready to record, click the Record button on GarageBand's transport controls.
Recording more than one track at a time
By default, GarageBand only allows for one audio track to be recorded simultaneously. To enable multitrack recording:
- Right-click on the audio track, and select Configure Track Header.
- Tick Record Enable from the list. You should then see the record symbol next to the input monitoring button.
- When recording multiple tracks, ensure each track you would like to record has the record symbol lit up, then click record on the transport controls.
