Applies to compatible audio interfaces connected to an iPad or iPhone.
If you are unsure whether your Focusrite audio interface is compatible with iOS and iPadOS, please see the following article: iOS and iPadOS Compatibility.
There are some settings on iPads and iPhones that might prevent or affect sound (audio) coming from the inputs or going to the outputs of your audio interface.
We tested the settings for this article on OS 26; depending on how up-to-date your iPhone or iPad is, some settings may not be available to you.
Before proceeding with the steps to resolve the issues covered in this article, please make sure you have set up your audio interface correctly with your iPad or iPhone:
- Connecting your USB-C iPad with your Audio Interface (also applies to USB-C iPhone, but a powered hub or power supply for your interface may be required)
- Using bus-powered Scarletts with Lightning iOS devices
Your interface will not appear in any of the settings menus mentioned below if it is not connected correctly to your iPad or iPhone. If in doubt, please refer to the articles linked above.
Set the output device for the current app
Setting the output device should enable you to hear sound from applicable apps through your audio interface. You will need headphones or speakers plugged into your audio interface directly.
On your iPad or iPhone, open Control Centre* and tap the button in the top right of the audio card to select the output device for the current app. You should then see available output devices for the current app — press Show More if a device you wish to use does not appear.
From here, you can select your audio interface as the output device.

Set default input for all apps
This allows you to input sound from your audio interface (e.g. a mic or guitar) into all apps that are capable of receiving it.
Go to Settings →
Sound & Haptics → Input
Then, set the default input device for all applications. It's best to set this to your audio interface, unless you have another specific setup in mind.
Set the input device for the current app
You can also set the input device for specific apps, so check this if the Sound & Haptics setting above doesn't work for an app.
Open Control Centre* on your iPad or iPhone, and tap the Controls button at the very top of the screen for the current app, if available — you may need to be attempting to record or stream audio into the app in order for this to appear.
You should then see all the connected input devices, and you can select your audio interface.

No audio input?
If you cannot get audio into a particular application, you may also need to allow it to use the microphone in your iPad or iPhone's privacy settings — on Apple devices ‘microphone’ actually means any audio input device, including your audio interface.
Navigate to Settings →
Privacy & Security →
Microphone
Then, check that the toggle switch for the app you are using is enabled (green).
Still no audio input, or audio input is glitchy?
Check the Mic Mode in case it is causing issues with your inputs.
On your iPad or iPhone again, open Control Centre* and tap the Controls button at the very top of the screen for the current app, if available. Beneath the currently selected input device, you should see the Mic Modes.
Select

Scarlett Solo 4th Generation: No audio from the mic input
Due to the way some apps are designed, they may only be able to use the first input from your audio interface. Scarlett Solo 4th Generation's mic input is input 2, but we have introduced a feature to help with applications that have this issue.
Please carry out the steps in the following article to enable this feature: Scarlett Solo 4th Gen one or two input app compatibility.
