It is normal for the gain or USB LEDs to flash on and off a couple of times when you first connect the USB cable to your computer. It is also normal for the LEDs around the gain dial to flash if the inputs are receiving some audio signal.
However, if you find the gain or USB LEDs flash on and off constantly when your interface is connected, it usually means it is not able to draw enough power from your computer. Windows may also continue to attempt to connect the device, often denoted by a chime sound.
If you own a Scarlett or iTrack interface, and you are encountering this problem, then we would recommend:
Optimise your computer
Please try the steps in the below article (depending on the Windows version you are on), especially the USB optimisation, to ensure that your USB ports are supplying enough power:
Test another USB port and USB cable
Not all USB ports perform the same, even if they're on the same computer. You may find you get better performance from one USB port on your computer compared to another.
Also, your USB cable may be the cause of the issue. It may be too long for a stable connection, or may be faulty. Please try another USB cable (less than 2 metres in length) if you have one available.
- USB-B to A cables (Scarlett 1st/2nd Gen and iTrack Solo) are usually included with other household electronic devices such as printers, scanners, or cameras
- USB-C to A cables (Scarlett 3rd Gen) are sometimes included with various electronic accessories such as mobile phones and Bluetooth speakers
Using a mains-powered USB hub
Sometimes using a mains-powered USB hub can be a good solution if your USB port still isn't supplying enough power to your interface.
Below are some powered USB hubs we have tested. Other powered hubs may work, but have not been tested at this time.
- TRUST UK HU-5540
- TRUST USB 3.0 Hub 4-Port
- Belkin USB 2.0 Hub 7-port
- Anker AH221 USB 3.0 7-port
- Amazon Basics USB 2.0 7-port hub (ASIN No: B00E0NH9FC)
Please note that the hub must use mains power in order to resolve the issue; bus-powered hubs will not work. In general, we will only suggest using a mains-powered USB hub if you're having this particular issue, as it is always best to connect your interface directly to a USB port on your computer if possible. We recommend you test a hub before you purchase, if possible.
