Applies to: Mains-powered USB audio interfaces
The control software for our interfaces is only compatible with Windows and macOS, so it's important that the desired settings and routings are configured on a desktop or laptop computer before connecting the device to an iPhone or iPad. The control software dictates which audio signals get routed to each output on the interface.
The FC2 mobile app acts as a remote control for the desktop Focusrite Control 2 application. It does not recognise and cannot control the features of an interface connected directly to the iPhone or iPad.
Use the control software compatible with your audio interface:
- Focusrite Control 2 (Scarlett 4th Gen, Scarlett 3rd Gen, Clarett+, Clarett USB, ISA C8X)
- Focusrite Control (Scarlett 3rd Gen, Clarett+, Clarett USB)
- Scarlett MixControl (Scarlett 2nd Gen, Scarlett 1st Gen)
You can download this software from the Downloads section of our website.
The below sections show examples of how to route the audio on your interface.
Focusrite Control 2
Applies to: Scarlett 4th Gen, ISA C8X, Clarett+ & Clarett USB
All changes made within the control software are automatically saved to the hardware.
Mixer
Software monitoring
To only monitor your interface's inputs via an application on the iPhone/iPad, and without direct monitoring:
- Open Focusrite Control 2
- Navigate to the Mixer tab on the left
- Select Mix A at the top of the window
- Under Routed to make sure Outputs 1-2 and Headphones 1 (and optionally, Headphones 2) are selected
- Turn up the fader for Playback 1-2
- Ensure all other inputs are turned down or muted
Direct monitoring
For information on what direct monitoring means, see: What is direct monitoring?
To direct monitor one (or a number) of your interface's inputs via studio monitors and/or headphones:
- Open Focusrite Control 2
- Navigate to the Mixer tab on the left
- Select Mix A at the top of the window
- Under Routed to make sure Outputs 1-2 and Headphones 1 (and optionally, Headphones 2) and selected
- Turn up the faders for the channels you wish to monitor through these outputs
On your iOS recording application, disable software input monitoring or mute the tracks you are recording into. Otherwise, the direct signal and the signal via the software creates a doubling effect as the same signal is heard twice.
In the example below, Playback 1-2 (which contains all audio from the iPhone/iPad itself) and Analogue 1-8 are turned up in a mix assigned to Output 1-2, Headphones 1 and Headphones 2.
This means audio from apps (e.g. listening back to your recordings), and the direct signal from inputs 1-8, is sent to the main speaker outputs and headphones.
You can adjust the relative balance of the inputs using the faders in the Mixer tab.
Other settings
While all inputs can be controlled directly from the hardware, other settings, such as the sample rate and clock source need to be set in Focusrite Control 2's Device Preferences ( → Preferences → Device) before connecting to the iPhone or iPad.
Focusrite Control
Applies to: Scarlett 2nd Gen, Scarlett 3rd Gen, Clarett+ & Clarett USB
All changes made within the control software are automatically saved to the hardware.
Output Routing
Software monitoring
To only monitor your interface's inputs via an application on the iPhone/iPad, and without direct monitoring:
- Open Focusrite Control
- Navigate to the Output Routing tab
- Select Playback 1-2 for each physical output you have your speakers or headphones connected to (e.g. Outputs 1-2, Headphones 1, Headphones 2)
Direct monitoring
For information on what direct monitoring means, see: What is direct monitoring?
To direct monitor one (or a number) of your interface's inputs via studio monitors and/or headphones:
- Open Focusrite Control
- Navigate to the Output Routing tab
- Select Custom Mix for each physical output you have your speakers or headphones connected to (e.g. Outputs 1-2, Headphones 1, Headphones 2)
- On the right-hand side of the Focusrite Control window, add the inputs you wish to monitor by clicking the + icon and selecting the inputs
- Adding Playback 1-2 to your mix allows you to hear your iPhone/iPad's audio (e.g. listening back to your recordings)
On your iOS recording application, disable software input monitoring or mute the tracks you are recording into. Otherwise, the direct signal and the signal via the software creates a doubling effect as the same signal is heard twice.
You can adjust the relative balance of the inputs using the faders in the Focusrite Control software.
Input settings
If connecting a guitar/bass to one of the first two inputs on the interface, you'll need to select the Inst (Instrument) circuit rather than the Line circuit. This can be done in the Input Settings section of Focusrite Control:
Output level
You can change the volume of the outputs by using the faders on the left-hand outputs side of the Output Routing window. The Monitor Controls section in the Device Settings tab dictates which outputs the physical main monitor dial is controlling the volume for on some larger interfaces.
Sample Rate and Clock Source
Ensure the sample rate is set at the desired rate and your sync source settings are correct (if you're not connecting any additional equipment digitally via ADAT or S/PDIF, this should be Internal).
Once the interface has been configured for your requirements, disconnect the device from your computer; the settings and routing are automatically saved to the hardware.
You can now proceed with connecting the interface to your iPhone/iPad.
Scarlett MixControl
Applies to: Scarlett 1st Gen
Changes made within the control software are not automatically saved to the hardware. See the Saving settings to hardware section below.
Mixer
Software monitoring
To only hear the return signal from the recording software (for example, an amp simulator):
- Open Scarlett MixControl
- Open the Routing Preset menu
- Select DAW Tracking
- Navigate to File → Save to Hardware
Direct monitoring
For information on what direct monitoring means, see: What is direct monitoring?
To direct monitor one (or a number) of your interface's inputs via studio monitors and/or headphones:
- Open Scarlett MixControl
- Open the Routing Preset menu
- Select Zero Latency Tracking
- Navigate to File → Save to Hardware
On your iOS recording application, disable software input monitoring or mute the tracks you are recording into. Otherwise, the direct signal and the signal via the software creates a doubling effect as the same signal is heard twice.
Input settings
If connecting a guitar/bass to one of the first two inputs on the interface, you'll need to select the Inst (Instrument) circuit rather than the Line circuit. This can be done at the bottom of Scarlett Mix Control (or on the front panel of the interface).
Output settings
On the right-hand side of Scarlett Mix Control is the Monitoring section. In this section, it's possible to dictate the level being sent to each output on the interface.
- If an output is blue, its volume is affected by the position of the software volume dial.
- If red, that output is off and no signal passes from it.
You can turn outputs blue/red by left-clicking on them.
Shift-clicking turns an output grey. This means that the output is not affected by the position of the volume dial and outputs at full scale (maximum volume). This is useful to control, for example, the volume of the headphone outputs using the controls on the interface itself.
Sample Rate and Clock Source
Ensure the sample rate is set at the desired rate and your sync source settings are correct (if you're not connecting any additional equipment digitally via ADAT or S/PDIF, this should be Internal).
Saving settings to hardware
After you have finished your configuration, go to File → Save to Hardware
This saves the settings to the interface, and it can now be disconnected from the computer.
To proceed with the physical connection between your iPhone/iPad and your mains-powered interface, see Connecting a mains-powered USB interface to an iPhone or iPad.
