In RedNet Control 2, there are two different save options located in the File drop-down: Device Save and Session Save. Both serve different purposes and are not the same file type.
Device Save
Device Save allows you to save the current hardware settings on the device as a file you can use to recall the device's current settings at a later date.
Device save is only available for RedNet units with changeable input or output settings.
For example, for the RedNet MP8R, a Device Save saves the mic gain, pad, impedance, 48V, polarity/phase, HPF (high pass filter), and gain compensation states.
For the Red Range of interfaces (Red 4Pre, Red 8Pre, Red 8Line, and Red 16Line), a Device Save saves the preamp states, input routing, output routing, custom mixes, etc.
Devices save their current functional settings, which are recalled when the unit is reconnected to a network or powered back on. You can use Device Saves to back up the function settings on the device or to recall the exact same settings at a later date.
Session Save
Session Save stores Tab names, the location of RedNet devices within a Tab in RedNet Control 1, the Tab Sample Rate settings, and the Tab Follow Device setting.
The screenshot below highlights what is saved for the different files. Pink shows what a Session Save stores and recalls; green shows the Device Save. Device Saves are per device.
