Connecting both a Scarlett 18i20 and an OctoPre to a Clarett 8PreX

Applies to: Scarlett 18i20, Scarlett/Clarett OctoPre, Clarett 8PreX

To successfully connect these three units together you will need three ADAT cables and one Word Clock cable.

Step 1 - Setting up the Clarett 8PreX to be the host.

First, connect your Clarett 8PreX to the computer and open Focusrite Control. Set the Sample Rate to what you intend to use (for an ADAT setup you will want to keep it at either 44.1 or 48) and then set the Clock Source to Internal.

Second, you will want to create a Custom Mix for any outputs you intend to use, and include all of the ADAT inputs in line with the Analogue channels.

Now close Focusrite Control with the Clarett 8PreX still connected to computer to save this setup. Leaving the Clarett 8PreX turned on, disconnect the Thunderbolt cable from the computer and continue to Step 2.

Step 2 - Setting up the Scarlett 18i20.

Next, connect the Scarlett 18i20 to the computer and re-open Focusrite Control. Match the Sample Rate to what you set for the Clarett 8PreX, but change the Clock Source for this unit to ADAT. Now connect your first ADAT cable OUT of the Clarett 8PreX to the IN of the Scarlett 18i20 and the Sync Status should change to Locked.

Then connect the second ADAT cable OUT of the Scarlett 18i20 to the IN of the Clarett 8PreX. To ensure audio is set to travel through the ADAT output, assign each Analogue input to the corresponding ADAT output as shown below.

Then close Focusrite Control with the Scarlett 18i20 connected to the computer to save this setup. Leaving the Scarlett turned on, disconnect the USB and then connect the Clarett 8PreX back to the computer.

Step 3 - Setting up the Scarlett/Clarett OctoPre.

To add an OctoPre into the equation, connect the third ADAT cable OUT of the OctoPre to the (second) IN of the Clarett 8PreX. Then connect the Word Clock cable OUT of the Clarett 8PreX to the IN of the Octopre. On the front panel of the OctoPre, press the Sync button until Word Clock is selected and press the Sample Rate button to match the settings you decided for the Clarett 8PreX.

You should now have audio from both your Scarlett 18i20 and Scarlett/Clarett OctoPre into your Clarett 8PreX. If you are having issues with this setup please Contact Technical Support.
