In order to use the Dante inputs/outputs on the Red 4Pre you will need to download and install Dante Controller to your computer:
Dante Controller allows you to route audio channels between Dante devices.
Using Dante Input with Red 4Pre
In order to use the Dante inputs and outputs on the 4Pre you will first need to make sure that Advanced Routing is enabled. To do this, press the Meter and Monitor buttons simultaneously to enter the Global Settings menu.
Rotate the Output Encoder to get to the Routing menu. Click on the encoder to change the option and select Advanced Routing.
Once this is set press the Monitor button to exit the Global Settings menu.
There are two clocking domains with the Red 4Pre: one for the Red 4Pre interface itself and one for the built in Dante Card.
The Red 4Pre can be set as the 'Preferred Master' for the other devices on the Dante network to clock to. If using the Red 4Pre's Internal clock, or clocking from devices connected over SPDIF, ADAT, Wordclock or Loop Sync the 'Enable Sync to External' option in Dante Controller must be selected, as these clock sources are outside of the Dante network.
To do this, in Focusrite Control navigate to Device Settings > Clock Source. Please set the clock source and sample rate in which you wish to use - you will need to use the same sample rate later when configuring Dante Controller.
Alternatively, you can Sync your Red 4Pre as a slave to the Dante network. To do this, select 'Dante' as the clock source in Focusrite Control. The Dante card needs to be the master in situations in which there is a different Dante device acting as Master for the Dante network.
The screen shot below reflects the Red 4Pre as the Preferred Master as well as the Enable Sync To External option selected.
There may be instances where the Red 4Pre will not be the Master Clock and it will need to slave off another Dante enabled device. If this is the case, you need to uncheck the Preferred Master. In Focusrite Control, you will need to change the Clock Source to Dante.
Routing in Dante Controller
In order to get audio to and from the Red 4Pre over Dante, you will need to make subscriptions to and from it from the Routing tab in Dante Controller.
In this section devices are listed as Transmitters and Receivers. The Transmitter is the Dante device that will be sending audio and the Receiver is the device that will be receiving audio.
In this screen shot, Dante Virtual Soundcard is set as the device that will be sending audio to the Red 4Pre. The green bubbles that have check marks indicate that a proper subscription was made to the Red 4Pre from Dante Virtual Soundcard. Subscriptions can be made by clicking in the routing matrix.
Recording Dante Audio
Once all the routing has been done in Dante Controller the next step is to record the Dante audio in your DAW. Please refer to page 24 of the Red 4Pre User Guide to see a chart of the Dante input and outputs on the Interface:
Here is an example of how the inputs will show up in some DAWs.
Sending Output From the DAW to the Dante Card
To send audio from your DAW to a device on the Dante network you will need to select one of the Red 4Pre's Dante outputs in your DAW. Similar to the inputs, some DAWs may not show you a description of the Dante output when selecting it.
When using the Red 4Pre in Thunderbolt Mode, hardware inputs (e.g. Analogue In 1) or outputs from a DAW can be assigned to each Dante transmitter channel. This is configurable from the 'Mixing and Routing' tab in Focusrite Control. As mentioned earlier you will then need to use Dante Controller to make the subscriptions to any devices on the Dante Network.
Pro Tools HD mode
The screen shot below is a view of the outputs in Pro Tools when connecting via the HD Card. When at 44.1/48 kHz, the Dante Outputs start at Playback 33.
For example, when using a Pro Tools HD system output 33 corresponds to Dante transmitter channel 1 as it's the first Dante output on the Red 4Pre.

Routing Red 4Pre Inputs to Dante Card
The Red 4Pre also has the ability to route the inputs of the interface to be routed directly to the Dante portion of the interface. This will allow for you to send the Mic, Line, Instrument, ADAT, and SPDIF inputs to other RedNet interfaces, Dante enabled devices, and/or Dante Virtual Soundcard.
This can be beneficial if you are looking to send the audio to a Dante system for redundancy recording. Keep in mind, this will not be possible when in Pro Tools Mode as changing the output routing is disabled in Focusrite Control. In order to assign the inputs of the interface to the Dante Card you will need to be in the Thunderbolt Mode.
Routing Dante audio to Outputs of the Red 4Pre
With the Red 4Pre you also have the ability to take Dante audio and route it directly to the outputs of the interface. This allows you to monitor audio straight from the Dante network by, for example, routing Dante inputs straight to line outputs on the Red 4Pre.
